What is a solar light simulator?
A solar or solar light simulator is an artificial system designed to replicate the spectral distribution and illuminance of natural sunlight. There are different types of solar light simulators, each with technical specifications tailored for specific applications. Various types are typically separated by the type of exposure used (flash, continuous, and pulsed). With new science, light sources have moved from standard halogen lamps and xenon lamps to LEDs. We have entered a new era of LED solar light simulator technology, with solid-state lighting (SSL) taking center stage. LEDs offer flexible pulse drive and spectra, as well as a lifespan far exceeding that of their predecessors.
How does IEC define “natural sunlight”?
The spectral definition of sunlight is the global air quality 1.5 (AM 1.5G) spectrum. At AM 1.5G, one sun is equivalent to 100 mW/cm² of irradiance. The International Electrotechnical Commission (МЭК) describes the characteristics of natural sunlight penetrating the atmosphere in IEC 60904-9; therefore, any industry-standard solar simulator must be able to operate according to these criteria.
